Meet Our Furry Boys

Hello, and welcome to our first blog post from WaY Out Here. We wanted to take a moment and introduce you to our boys.

We have four male alpacas.

We first became interested in alpacas after we had a duckling scooped up by a hawk, although it's not even that simple, to be honest. We started discussing animals we could put in our duck yard that would deter birds of prey, foxes, skunks, and the like from attempting to grab a duck. My husband wanted a donkey, and I wanted a llama.

Needless to say, we "settled" on alpacas, but the word settled is not right either. We were able to reserve two male cria from a farm near us, but sadly, one of those got a rare neurological condition and died before he was six months old.

Then came the task of finding others to put with our cria, Paco. We found them!

We can get into this story in depth more later, but for now, we wanted to introduce you to our boys that inspired our journey into alpaca shearing.

Meet Sid

Sid originally came to us named "Murray" but our daughter insisted we call him Sid, after the Ice Age sloth. Honestly, it is a perfect name and it has stuck. Sid has a wry jaw, but his nasal cavity is perfectly fine. He can eat pellets, hay, and loves to be hand fed apple treats!

Meet Paco and Pablo

Paco is the cria we adopted, and he will be one in July. He's all white, and looks a lot like a cotton ball right now. He has a calm and loving demeanor and enjoys being hand fed "alpaca salads" we make from carrots, celery, and lettuce. He is our only intact male. He's too young to geld, and we already have offers to have him bred to pass on his fiber to his cria. His fiber is absolutely beautiful and thick and will make great yarn!

Pablo came to us as "Moose", and we liked that name. However, we have a cayuga duck named Moose, so we needed a change. Pablo is a dark brown color leaning reddish. He is a leader. He enjoys going on walks in his halter and standing guard on our big snow pile we've amassed this winter.

Meet Ichabod

Ichabod is a brown boy without as much red in his fiber as Pablo. He is still learning to be on a halter, but he's doing well and learning fast. He will actually be two soon, as his birthday is this weekend! He loves alpaca pellets and standing guard with Pablo if he isn't hungry.
